For over 30 years, Edward Fickess has provided representation and managed legal services for tax controversies.  His accomplishments include a successful track record in complex tax litigation.  Mr. Fickess’ experience includes years as a Special Litigation Assistant for the I.R.S. Office of Chief Counsel, as well as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney.  His courtroom practice includes white collar crime defense, and civil proceedings in the United States Tax Court.  Such trials typically involve substantive tax law applications, financial analysis, motions practice, discovery, depositions, expert testimony, subpoena issuance & enforcement, trial proceedings, and extensive briefing.

While at I.R.S. Counsel, Mr. Fickess gained 15 years experience in supervising and providing legal services for audits of large multinational corporations throughout upstate New York.  Such cases typically involve factual and legal development of substantial domestic or foreign tax issues.  He also served for 6 years as Data Processing Industry Counsel for the Commissioner’s Industry Specialization Program, a position that involved analyzing industry-specific domestic and international tax issues arising from Boston to Silicon Valley.

For several years, Mr. Fickess managed the I.R.S.’ legal staff and professional services supporting Federal tax administration in all of Upstate New York.  He has extensive consulting experience, both as a Federal attorney and as one aspect of his present law practice.

In addition to practicing law at the I.R.S., Mr. Fickess taught five national I.R.S. litigation training programs, and authored portions of the training materials.  He was a government counsel member of the litigation team in the landmark case of ACM Partnership v. Commissioner.  More recently, in 2008 and 2009 he provided effective tax counsel for the defense team in United States v. Auffenberg, et al., a massive white collar case involving the tax attributes of business conducted in the U.S. Virgin Islands Economic Development Agency.
